BiOM® Ankle Foot

BiOM Ankle Foot *

The BiOM Ankle System* is the only commercially-available device for amputees that provides natural Bionic Propulsion. The BiOM® Ankle System is the only ankle-foot device that will enable your patients to achieve a normalized biomimetic response across all level-ground walking speeds.

Bionics is the science of constructing artificial systems that have some of the characteristics of living systems. The BiOM® Ankle System provides natural Bionic Propulsion, emulating muscle function about the healthy human ankle during the load-bearing stance phase of walking. The benefits of Bionic Propulsion to amputee patients has been carefully studied and published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The BiOM® System decreases impact force and knee moment on the unaffected leg during level-ground walking near the preferred gait speed relative to passive prostheses. Clinicians state that a prosthesis such as the BiOM® that provides normal levels of powered plantar flexion could reduce the risk of comorbidities such as knee osteoarthritis.

Personal Bionics is transforming the prosthetic industry with Bionic Propulsion ankle technology that emulates missing muscle and tendon function. Since all other commercially-available ankle devices do not provide natural Bionic Propulsion during the walking stance phase, significant gait deviations occur. For the first time in history, the BiOM® offers programmable stiffness modulation and power assist to emulate lost muscle function, reducing gait deviation, resulting in lower metabolic energies, faster speeds, and lower joint stresses throughout the musculoskeletal system.

Other ankle technology includes those made entirely of passive components such as carbon-fiber springs and titanium. These systems return less energy than they absorb. All other ankle devices have a spring or hydraulic response during stance, and thus have net-negative propulsive energy, because springs and dampers cannot release more energy than they absorb. As a result, people using passive technology walk with an altered gait. Another ankle technology includes microprocessor control of plantar and dorsiflexion positions. These ankle systems position the foot during the swing phase of walking in response to terrain but are locked during stance phase, providing no active propulsion for the user. In clear contrast, the BiOM System* provides Bionic Propulsion to the amputee patient, a unique technological platform that restores normal ankle stiffness and power during the stance phase of walking. Bionic Propulsion emulates normal muscle and tendon function by way of two bionic control actions. First, at heel strike the BiOM® provides programmable control of ankle spring stiffness to absorb shock and to propel the tibia forward at midstance. Second, during the late stance phase of walking, the BiOM® provides programmable control of net-positive power assist. The BiOM® controls torque and power to emulate normal levels of ankle powered plantar flexion, pushing the amputee upwards and forwards into their walking stride. The device replaces the function of the individual’s lost muscle and tendon anatomy and provides more energy than it stores, providing a net-positive power assist. This action emulates the missing calf muscles of the human ankle joint, supplying net energy to the amputee’s walking stride for the first time in prosthetic history.
